similar to kf850 but smaller and lighter?
« on: March 21, 2013, 12:42:35 pm »

I'm wondering what by eaw or any other brand would have a box that compares to an kf850 in volume and sound but smaller in size and weight to be flown or ground stacked. Thinking a kf650 but I'm wondering what else is out there. I'm guessing with all the improvements over the years there has to be something new on the market.

I just feel the 850s can take up a lot of space when in transit.

Thanks

A couple of the Danleys are thrown around in the same circles - SH46, and possibly the SM80.

SH46's are worth a hard look.  The SM80's are good, but don't have near the output/low mids/tight pattern.

Eaw Qx is a good box, but it's not stackable.

JBL STX835s? Not totally equivalent, but within a ballpark from what some others have described here.

KF750 with UX8800. 33% smaller and lighter with 6dB more output.

Good call.  750s are fine horizontally; the problems arise in the vertical plane.

It is one thing to try to compare box to box-but the REAL question should be about the SYSTEM and what sort of show it is being used on-how it is transported-rigged etc.

Is this for 1 box a side?   Is the system flown or stacked?  How many hands are available?  Does it have to go up steps to shows?  Is it transported in a van-a large truck?

What is the budget?  What is the coverage pattern needed?

So many questions that have to be answered long before you start to consider different boxes.

What is it that you like about the 850?  Or what makes it the ""like" box to compare to?

How much are you looking to spend? d&b C series, EV X-array(XCN), and Nexo Alpha are all high output cubes. Smaller, lighter, louder(arguably better sounding). I've never had a good show on KF750's, so unlike Tim, I cannot recommend them.

My first pick would be the d&b C series. 3 C4 Top, 3 C4 sub, and 3 B2's per side would kick some serious ass.

The KF650 is always a solid box- and the "z" model when properly processed and powered can pretty much run with the 850 from 120hz up. The Community SLS stuff is also good, but I would see either of these choices as a sideways step. The only really positive thing about the SLS stuff is that you can run them passive and the SQ/output is still fantastic. I run 2 SLS960 per channel of a QSC PL6.0 and have yet to see the limiters in the rig. The subs run out of gas well before the tops.

The JBL STX is also a nice choice, but I don't think it has the output to keep up with an 850, and it will not array as nicely.
