Today's silly spec
« on: March 05, 2013, 11:42:17 am »

For a school Cafetorium: "Loudspeaker jacks shall be Neutrik NL4FC 4-pole Speakon, mounted on a stainless steel plate suitable for attachment to a single-gang electrical box, insulated with fiber washers so as to isolate speaker ground from the plate."

That was written by somebody who has no idea how a speakon is constructed.

Maybe they assume it is like 1/4" jack-in which case they are TOTALLY correct.  I have run into a number of cases where the ground of the 1/4" was shorted to ground and causing all sorts of issues.

Agreed. Somebody cut-n-pasted this from another doc calling for 1/4" jacks, then inserted wrong sex of connector.

Not correct at all Ivan. Washers alone won't isolate the metal plate from the metal box.

Maybe the retaining screw for the plate is nylon.......

But fiber washers would isolate a 1/4" jack from the plate.
Again, a moot point for a Speakon connector.

Maybe if they never moved. What's used are nylon shoulder washers which insulates the chassis front, back, and through the chassis to protect the EDGE of the hole. Regardless, you're right, it's a moot point.

The shoulder washers are what I was talking about.
