The manual (ahem) states that any TS on/off toggle switch will suffice.

I'd stick a guitar cord in the jack and short the contacts before going out to buy a switch.

I'll probably skip the fork and shorting the plug.  I should be able to borrow a foot switch tomorrow.

So the defeat wasn't the issue.  Put it in the shop and see what they can come up with.  Hopefully won't be too expensive to not be worth it.
