2013 Oscars - Sound Problems with 5.1 Broadcast
« on: February 25, 2013, 05:49:37 PM »

I'll try again....

No - I'm not asking this question becuase I didn't do the production.  That was an ignorant statement, something I would expect from a 12 year old on Harmony Central.

Yes - my NAD rcvr that works perfectly on all other programs except for the Oscars - could be messed up.  Excluding that:

The broadcast seemed to have some serious issues with the assigning and panning of the lead vocal mic on musical performances.  Lead vocal was LR then C.  Sometimes it would go back to LR.  There was a gate on the C that would open with loud sounds that triggered the gate such as audience scream/applause.

Did any one else experience this?

BTW - I did read that this was the first time that the Oscars were broadcast in 5.1 surround.

As I stated before I had no issues my Marantz system attached to a Samsung flat screen. I thought the sound was fine and there was no hint of a gate on the center channel. I have great respect for NAD receivers, so who knows. Maybe someone else had the same issues, but again, and to me, the broadcast sounded fine.

Thanks for the info Bob.  I will see if anyone else noticed anything.  I Googled Oscar Bad Sound and there are a few blogs talking about various issues, but not 5.1 assigning issues.

I had this same experience.  Just on the musical performances.  I have an Emotiva DMC-1.

I wonder how much of this is the local station.  Ours keeps running a ticker about Direct TV and how it won't carry the station.. blah.. .blah...   Regardless of that crap, every time the ticker comes up the picture goes from wide screen to 4:3 and the sound gets odd.  Sound changes depends on the show.  I know broadcast chains are different, our two local NPR stations sound quite different with the same feed.

That's a function of the conversion Rick. Different formats are presented in a size the decoder thinks is best and hence the differences in sound and screen size. Note that many people, myself included, depend on their receiver and not the TV to decode the signal and not all receivers, regardless of price, are created equal in that department.

Yea!   I thought it was my set-up!   Panasonic TC-P50ST50 to Yamaha RX-V671 using V1.4 HDMI Cable using an over the air signal (Mouse owned) The worst was during Streisand's tribute to Hamlisch. The center channel kept cutting in and out.   My wife also noticed wonkyness on the Toshiba LCD in the bedroom with internal sound.  Could have been the mix, the truck, network or the uplink,  but the problem wasn't the Sat downlink, the stations, or cable/sat providers or home systems.

Nice to know that others noticed it too.  At this point, I will assume it was a real problem and not my system.

No one in my family noticed it - but it drove me crazy.  I got up and stood in front of the C speaker to hear what was going on.

I assume that who ever was running audio, didn't really know what was going on with their mixer and something was assigned wrong.  The funny thing is, it almost sounded like an "auto panning" plugin was assigned to the lead vocal.  It was constantly moving from LR to C.  There was certainly a gate on the C channel which is very odd.  It would be dead and then open up with loud room sounds.

If it was not the Engineers fault - how could any thing else down-stream in the broadcast chain change the position of the lead vocal?

They gave out movie awards already?  Gee, I missed yet another year of industry back-patting.  But I can imagine the audio of the displayed cleavage was stellar. :P
