Hearing Impared
« on: January 30, 2013, 08:39:03 AM »

About 3 weeks ago I got the flu and although I have mostly recovered my ears are still constantly stopped up and my tonal definition is off. I hate take pills but am getting desperate. What works for you guys?

I did a fly-in gig for a client once, to mix his show, and my ears stopped up from the altitude! Whew! they unstopped enough by the time the show started. It has been my experience that stopped up ears aren't as much of a problem once the volume gets up. It seems extreme at 70 db but tends to lessen the affect at 110db.

I had to mix a show 2 days after I finally was able to get out of bed and the entire time it sounded like I was mixing under water. I actually resorted to watching an RTA to at least make sure that the tonal balance was reasonably ok. The room was also very reverberant so the lack of mix quality was somewhat masked by the crappiness of the acoustics.

You might try sucking Altoids or other high peppermint candies, but since it has been over  3 weeks I'd suggest going to a doctor to see if you have a middle ear infection.   Your ears are too valuable to risk.  If I had seen this earlier, I would have suggested trying an OTC decongestant right away to prevent problems like this. This is what my Doc and one of my AV clients (also a Doc) both suggest.
Get well soon
