Why all the inverted motors?

What do you mean?  This is the standard configuration for entertainment motors (as opposed to commercial use).  It allows the chain only to be hoisted into the air and connected.  Standard is for the motor to be in a case, chain fully extended, thus allowing the chain to be pulled out and connected overhead to the pick.  The motor is then used to lift itself out of the case and hang in place waiting for it's load.
I'd hate to have to lift each motor to hang it.

We just had the 2nd national tour of Jersey Boys in our PAC.  Of the pre-rig points, most were "inverted" using the typical commercial orientation.  They had a pair of A-frame winches we hoisted to the grid to raise those hoists.  On the out they had pairs of riggers let the hoists in on ropes.

Wow...I have not run into the commercial orientation on shows very often.  It's a huge PITA!

i'm going to go with having NEVER seen it.

actually, we did do a show once in a ferrari dealership that had motors already installed overhead.  i can't remember if we actually used them or not, but i remember thinking they looked weird to me and then thinking that was ironic....

Why all the inverted motors?

Some of the motors were for scenic elements where the motor right above the piece would be unsightly. Most of them were "motor down".

On the small screen (couldn't be my aging eyes) I didn't see any that were motor up.  I went back and looked more closely.  Yep, I see them now.

yes I know the standard entertainment use...I'm referring to the two clearly inverted motors (chain down) to the right of FOH....there also appear to be a few in the background as well, hence my question.

mac: ahh, scenic...makes sense, those guys always want to do stuff backwards! :)

Yep, already blamed my small screen on my iPad (since it can't be my aging eyes)  ;-)
