One technique for miking the toms all together is to use a good dynamic mic pointed across the head of the floor tom.  Start with it parallel to the head.  If you need to subtly alter the tone/percentage, experiment with the axial response variations of the pattern by incremental angling/height.

I'm guessing that one would aim it across the floor tom pointed at the other one(he only has the one floor tom and one rack tom)? Would a 57 work for this? What we have now are a set of cheap CAD drum mics(which don't sound that great without ample eq work) that the drummer owned before the band got started.

Start with a well tuned, musical sounding drum kit.... after that it's easy
