PreSonus 32.4.2
« on: January 19, 2013, 04:33:06 AM »

Did anybody else notice the PreSonus 32.4.2ai in FOH this month?!? It was only a matter of time.

And Speakers?!?

This is going to be an interesting year for them I believe. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the console this year at NAMM. The idea behind the speaker and mixer integration (ai) is very interesting. Anyways, some thoughts for the week.

Unless I missed something, this is all that was said of the mixer:

Quote
With the onboard computation built both into the speakers and new 32-channel StudioLive 32.4.2AI mixer, system control/networking is available without having to bring a laptop to the gig — one less thing to carry. The new mixers also support both Dante and Thunderbolt, as well as FireWire 800.

Yes you did miss something I don't see the article on the site either. There is a small paragraph on pg 23 about it with a picture and some highlighted features.

I have had a couple of Presonus Consoles before and I never had a problem with them, also used them for recording, and they sounded very good, But lets face it...If they do not have flying faders and are not in the same price point as an x32...I would think that most people would go for the x32.

Does the 'Quick Scene Recall' functionality imply motorized faders, rotary encoders rather than pots and recallable preamps?  That would certainly make it more comparable to the X32 and M200i, but if not then I'm not sure I see that being a major change since how quickly one can actually recall many scene changes would still seem limited.

I'm afraid that there's more of significance NOT said in their blurb than improvements which will make an actual difference in market value.  It will lag  behind the X32 in pro-level functionality.  IMO, they'd be better off taking a step back and re-designing the 16 channel, small footprint mixer and going after the high-functioning, lower channel count end of things ran than trying to run with Behringer.

An expandable channel count mixer to replace the 01v would be a better bet than this.

I'm running the 24.4.2 now and while the 32.4.2 addresses some of my issues with the console, without recallable head amps and motorized faders, there is no way I would upgrade to this instead of the X32.  They better have some pretty compelling other features they haven't mentioned if they plan to compete in this segment.  And the newly upgraded X32 iPad app further sweetens the pot.  That thing controls EVERY feature of the board.  That was the one thing that Presonus really had going for it, a really fully featured iPad app.

This definitely isn't why I expected a new Presonus desk to look like. I was imagining a baby Allen Heath GLD. Full info not out yet I guess, I'll be interested to read about it.

I think the new X32 app shows Gain reduction in meters, and IF I am not wrong, allows one to change FX inserts too ?

That would be 2 steps ahead of the SL now,

And unfortunately my experience with mine, and a few other SL24's has not been so stellar.

Cheers!
