I had this problem with a number of original XTi's.  It is a problem Crown was aware of and sent out new input cards that were easily installed.  I believe the problem was with the input attenuators.  If you can isolate it to the amp I would suspect this is the problem.

The prolem seems to be solved (or at least I can't get it to repeat).  I first got some Caig Deoxit and cleaned every contact in the path (including all jacks and switches).  Then I re-hooked everything up (including the snake) and everything worked well.  Tried swapping several different cables, turning rack/board on and off, etc. and still no sign of trouble.  Caig Deoxit is the WD40 of the audio world.
