Intercom Beltpack issue
« on: December 04, 2012, 12:19:36 PM »

Hi all,
We are troubleshooting an install we did a few months back where we installed some TP BP-1 belt packs, among many other things.  We were called back in due to the belt packs picking up radio station signals after several months of problem free operation.  In the process of troubleshooting this issue for our client, we discovered a small push-button on the bottom plate of the belt pack, between the headset connector and one of the XLR connectors.  We can toggle it back and forth and there seems to be no change.  Anyone ever seen this or know what its function  might possibly be?  Thanks.

I assume the "TP BP-1" you are referring to is the Production Intercom BP-1. Factory support will be hard to come by as they recently went out of business, although they may re-emerge under new management.

I am not familiar with the switch on the bottom of the pack, although it may apply bias voltage to the mic for electret mic elements. This was a feature of some Clear Com packs. On some CC packs it also changes the mic pre sensitivity.

Since the intercom signal is unbalanced it can be prone to noise pick up, and AM radio stations can get into the system via something as small as a cold solder joint. You need to go through the system eliminating every cable, and every pack one at a time till you find the bad component. If the system has several branches coming back to the power supply you can speed the process by eliminating branches one at a time to narrow the search. Divide and conquer, the process of elimination will get to the bad component eventually.

Here is a LINK to a similar recent discussion. Unfortunately you can't use the caps on a com system, nor can you use transformers. You will need to find the offending component.
