Question about a snake with weird ends
« on: December 04, 2012, 10:18:21 AM »

Hi everyone. Stupid question I'm sure, but I am just a novice that just runs a small band rig so please bear with me.

I got a used snake at an incredible deal. I bought it from a guy who used to do big shows. It is a 32X8. The thing that is odd (and I'm not sure if it came like this or if he had rewired it after he bought it), all the inputs and outputs on the box end are female XLR. All the plugs on the fan end are male XLR.

The box is set up as to have 32 sends and 8 returns, but the jacks and inputs on the sends are backward. I have used the snake a few times and used adapters to reverse the gender, but I am considering just changing out the plugs on the fan end to female XLR.

Can I change the sends on the fan and leave the ones on the box end the same thus giving me female XLRs on both ends?

Thanks a lot for any help.

God bless.

Sure. It just means you always have to use turnarounds at one end or the other depending on which way the signal is moving.

Awesome.

Thank you for the quick response.

I would guess the snake was wired that way to provide 40 channels of stage input, and they used a separate "drive" snake for the sends.

After talking to the guy I bought it from, I kind of assumed the same thing since he had done some bigger shows.

Thanks a lot.

Heck, I do it with my 16-channel rig. The stage snake head doesn't have to end up close to the amp racks, and it doesn't have balanced returns anyway (actually, it's getting upgraded to balanced returns at this very moment). My drive snake has 12 channels so I can do more monitor mixes and/or put my speaker processing at mix position.
