My old Atari 400 came with several programs in a book you could type into the computer. One of them strung together random short sequences of notes in a pentatonic scale. It sounded a lot like Kenny G.

As long as we're on no-talent talent:

Kenny G is just plain "busy".   Take a breath and play one note and sustain it.
He cant do that.
To many notes, and not enough spaces.
Actually...he did exactly that.

It's called "circular breathing" and it's not a real big deal. My Dad taught me that technique with trumpet playing when I was 11 years old. It's hard to learn to control involuntary muscles. But to me, singing and playing bass at the same time was harder. And I was a teenager by then.

And I positively agree with everything this thread is about. We had our own crappy experience with the G many years ago. They tried to get us shut out of our own crew rooms on the other side of the arena. The Fair Commissioner had to step in on our behalf because of him. I had his first two CDs with my kit, I burned (well, melted) them partially and threw them at the foot of stairs to the stage.

That's inspiring. You made my day.

And yes, he did take one of my notes, the prick.

Pretty much every wind player (except flute players) learns how to do the circular breathing gimmick in high school or early college. And it can be a good exercise for strengthening the embouchure and diaphragm muscles. But it's still pretty much a gimmick.

I agree with everything Pat said in the post, and as a saxophone player I salute him for standing up and saying it.

It's a prerequisite for playing the didgeridoo properly.

There's a joke about the Australian aboriginal musician who gets pulled over by the cops to perform a breathalizer test...

A vocalist was pissed-off at a friend, a well-known brass player, who told him it would be impossible to teach him circular breathing; the singer took umbrage at the notion that it was something he "couldn't learn."
