F221 vs TSW-721?
« on: November 26, 2012, 11:23:40 PM »

I've heard/learned a number of things about these subs from different sources making me conclude they are extremely similar subs..

"The F221 horn design is almost identical to the TSW-721, it's like two TSW-721 stuck together"

I've even compared the dimensions and they don't seem too dissimilar:
F221:
1650mm
574mm
773mm

Two TSW-721
1686mm
582mm
867mm

"Both use 21" drivers made by precision devices"

"The F221 esentially uses a Precision Devices PD2150 driver"

"The PD2150 would go well in a TSW-721 horn design"

So my question is.. If these subs are so similar why does the F221 sound so much deeper?

I'm guessing that Precision Devises has improved their 21" driver design between when TSW721 and F221 was made? And that if I put PD2150s in TSW-721 it would improve their bass output?
Or is it because the crossover point between the subs and tops is lower with Funktion One, allowing the F221 to focus more energy on the lows and thus sound deeper?

This is a very common thing-to make a sub "appear" to have more low end-just roll of more top end-or crossover lower.

Since the higher freq are louder-when you have less of them to "get in the way", the bass sounds lower.

There is one manufacturer who uses this "technique" to give what call (not their term here) Extended bass response.  When in this "mode" the low end response is the same-but they just roll of the highs-so it "sounds" lower.  Fools a lot of people however.  And people "think" that this mode gives them more bass-when all it is really doing is less highs.

I have no idea or opinion on your particular case, but it is something to consider.

isnt rolling off the high end the way to obtain all bass.

I was referring to some particular subs that already have a HF (meaning below 100Hz) rolloff.

To make it "appear" to go "lower", they simply roll the low pass down a little bit.  At least that is what their spec sheet shows.
