Could be a peek into what Yamaha might have in store as a PM1D/5D replacement?

I had the same thought. I sure would like to see them make some Dante I/O that is all inputs or all outputs. Dante versions of updated AI8, AO8, and DIO8 I/O frames would be swell.

Wouldn't the CL series be considered those replacements?

None of the CL series consoles can replicate all the functionality of a PM5D, let alone a 1D.

The answer from Yamaha is "no". The CL are the beginning of a new line and are only the first units to market in that new line. Ostensibly, the 1D/5D replacements are yet to come.

The NUAGE IO might do this:

Not sure how these would work with out the rest of the system.

I looked at those, they are all inputs and outputs in the same box. A Dante card frame that could take either input or output cards in any combination in blocks of 4 or 8 channels so you could have say 24x24, or 40x8, or 8x40 would be great. Even smaller 24 or 32 channel versions would be great, you could build your system out of modular block to whatever I/O you need.

After reading up more on this, it's pretty apparent where Yamaha is going: networking and modularity. I can see some design elements shared with the CL series.

I think looking at this, and then looking at the CL series, I can see something like a Yamaha version of Meyer's LCS/D-Mitri Cue Station and Cue Console.

I have used Cubase for many years now and was always curious about it's hooks into Yamaha consoles since the day they bought Steinberg. Cubase is in some ways a better product than ProTools, and in some eays not. Regardless, combining the two products makes for an incredibly powerfull platform. So as a first thought based on the logical progression of digital designs and the marriage of the companies, this desk appears to be Yamaha's top dog in a battle with Avid. I'm not so sure though that this would be what I might want for a stadium concert, however, I'll bet Mac see's one before any of us and will be mighty pleased with it's capabilities.

At least when the concepts develop into a PA or recording console. Nuage is a control interface for Nuendo that gives you real hardware the way the Avid C-24 does for ProTools. Neither are ideal for live mixing, but for post production in the DAW environment real handles are, well, handy.

The modular, network connected, hardware seems to be the way of the future from Yamaha. I hope they come out with hardware that makes it easier to spec distributed I/O in permanent installs, and in large scale special projects.
