Scaffolding for raising speakers
« on: August 31, 2012, 08:35:11 am »

Just when reading another topic on raising speakers, it got me thinking. I am starting to do some festivals and thinking about getting my speakers up in the air. What sort of scaffolding do people use for raising speakers?

I'd ask first-what type of loudspeaker systems and/or lighting are you looking to elevate?

My gut reaction is more folks go to larger stands, genie lifts, and truss type lifts/construction nowadays.  I can't remember the last time I saw anything besides a small "Baker" type scaffold or one level of regular scaffolding, where here in the USA a 5' wide frame is a common size.  Heights of sections vary of course.  Prefab planks of aluminum/wood are often 7' long, but others are available.

I'd check around your area locally to see what is being rented, certainly before making a purchase.

Best regards,

John

I have a set of this:
http://www.menards.com/main/paint/ladders-scaffolding/scaffolding/rolling-scaffolding/6-utility-scaffold/p-1474474-c-7992.htm

The paint stripped off and powered coated black but that is it.  I use scaffolding because it was much cheaper than genie lifts and I need to lift 450lbs of speakers per side so the smaller lift stuff wouldn't work for me.  Hope this helps.

Too narrow for my taste, likely unstable with only 30" of width.  And forget the wheels.

I use 4'x6' medium duty commercial scaffolding with the screw-jack leveler feet.  I also have a set of wheels if I want to use the scaff when working on an install.

I made my own deck out of dimension lumber and plywood I had laying around, but I really should get the stock aluminum decking.

And if you want it to look good you'll want to invest in some kind of drape/covers.  Air-wall fabric is pretty ideal.  Your local "Sew What" franchise can run them up to order.  You can even screen print your logo or some art work on them.

Hmmmm, "Festival" does have a range of meanings I guess.  I agree with Josh at this point, get some larger K&M, Ultimate, or similar stands, crank versions if need be, and go with it.
