EV wireless drop out
« on: August 14, 2012, 09:44:30 pm »

Hey guys, looking for input from the crowd on what may be going on here.
A church has an EV RE-2 wireless unit with a belt pack and countryman headset. It is dropping out when in front of or near the main cabinet. As in an RF drop out. It's that slight crackle and quick drop out. Usually I would think this is a UHF freq issue, but using a Sennhiser hand held on the same freq and same process I get no problems.

Any thoughts? Sadly I don't have another belt pack to try. I did try the countryman and the EV headset, both to the same result.
Thanks!

The transmit antenna may be broken do to being dropped.

Check that the squelch setting has not been set too high.

Thanks guys, will check. Antenna appear fine and we even took it out of the rack to clear all obstructions.

Squelch sounds promising, will look tomorrow.

Thanks!

We had a few of those EV units and took them out of service due to basically poor performance.  If the squelch isn't the issue, the only other option is to move the receiver to another location, hopefully as close as possible to the transmitter.  I.e. on stage.  And then replace the unit with something better as soon as you can...

It's already no more than 50' or so from transmitter to receiver. The room is small and when the pastor walks and talks around the front of the stage it crackles only when he gets close to the speaker stacks. Otherwise clean as a whistle throughout the entire venue.

I had this exact same problem a few months ago with Shure's slx series lav.  There were several known dead spots on the stage, but those spots started to wander and roam.  I tried everything I knew to do-- sent the units back to Shure and was told that the RF in my area had changed and we were competing with a local DTV station.  Had me pulling my hair out for weeks- but it's all gravy now.

So if your troubleshooting fails, don't be afraid to call or send the mics back to the factory.  It's not always user error ;)

Ok. Make sure the system isn't a Band B system. If it is, then you are in the 697 Mhz to 730 mhz, which is now illegal by the FCC. Make sure its A or G band. I spoke with Chris from EV yesterday about mapping out some low level EV wireless systems for an install. He emailed me the right frequencys to be on in my area. He was really nice and there customer service has always been stella. I own 20 RE2 systems. They have been top notch even when running 12 at a time.
