Sound guy moments
« on: August 08, 2012, 05:56:33 pm »

Do you ever have any moments when you're nowhere near anything related to audio but your inner sound guy just shows up?  I was at my day job the other day just doing my work and not paying attention to anything when I heard someone ask me a question about something.  My first reaction was 'Wow!  what great sound quality' before realizing that the sound was coming from an actual person five feet away from me.  Another instance a while back I was out with a fairly large group of friends at restaurant, all of us in the same conversation, and when one of my friends that was closer to me, but not as loud as the others, I instinctively looked down to find which fader to pull up, only to realize that all that was down there was a half-eaten hamburger and a napkin.  Anyone else have theses kinds of moments?

Not when I take my meds. ;D

When I'm watching a Tv show, Movie, or listening to a radio program or piece of recorded music, I'm always catching my self monitoring the sound tracks.

   Good Luck,

I was watching the women's gymnastics floor routines -- and trying to figure out what they were using for wedges at the floor ex mat (looked a bit like SRM450 but the &@#&$(@ camera never zoomed in).

Maybe time for better meds and a longer vacation.    :o ??? ::)

Sometimes I want to wear IEMs and a stereo mic just so I can slap some compression and eq on what I'm hearing in daily life.

I was wondering the same thing. I was still trying to figure it out during the men's floor exercises as well and my girlfriend was slightly concerned by how much attention I was paying to men's gymnastics.

On the 4th of July I was watching fireworks and figuring out the delay and thus how far they were. I was imagining myself tapping the delay into my D-two.

Happens to me whenever I have the TV on, and I wonder why I should have to reach for a fader every time a commercial comes one; shouldn't I be able to insert a limiter instead?  ;)

Every once in a while when I am out shopping or otherwise in public, somebody nearby will get my attention just with the sound of their speaking voice.  They might be chatting on the cell phone or with someone.  I hear their voice and suspect that they might be a good singer too.  Since I don't mind asking, I have found out several times that my ears were telling me the truth.  They actually were singers, be it in a community theater, a church choir, or a band.  I'm guess that just makes me a natural born talent scout.  :D

Thinking of TVs...  Whenever I am away from my DVR, I inadvertently feel around on the remote for the search button to skip through the commercials, often when there is no DVR.

I have found my self instinctively "grabbing for the 31 band" when hearing train brakes, vacuum cleaners or other things that have surprised me with something resembling feedback.
