Qsc KLA vs KW 181
« on: July 29, 2012, 01:16:03 pm »

Looking at new powered subwoofers for my rental stock.  I know that the KW's weigh less.  The kla use power-cons just like my EV Sba760. I like that because it's stops customers from using there own Crappy IEC cables and getting mine confused even when it's labeled. I pretty set on QSC even though I've been an Electro-voice person for so long. My question is there a sonic difference to justify the price.  These will never be flown!

Cheers Ian

If I remember correctly the KLA version goes a tad bit lower but is also heavier and more expensive.
As far as power con vs IEC, the kw181 comes with special locking IEC connectors but can take any normal IEC cable, just be wary about losing the nice provided ones or send them out with normal ones that you don't mind getting lost.
I personally own a kw181 and use others all the time and they are really a good box to have around.
If you are never going to try to fly them then the normal kw181 is probably the better buy, just be sure to get some covers for them to keep them looking like new, QSC makes one that is custom made to fit and has a pocket for the power cord.

Sweetwater specs say the kla181 is -6 @38hz while the kw181 is -6 @40hz. Might just be because of the slightly altered cab for the flatware. Seems to me to be $600 extra price, extra weight, and extra size for a minor spec change, really only makes sense for flying.

For $2k, the VRX918SP's -3 is @34hz.

I have posed the same question to my QSC rep and he told me point blank that  they are the same sub, one has flyware and one does not. Other than that they have the same woofer and same amp, aside from the powercon input to facilitate power stringing with the KLA tops.

So with the KLA you are paying for Flyware and the Liability insureance bill back at qsc that comes with it.

I just had the same decision to make.  We went with KW181s, because we decided we'd never be flying them.  Don't forget the covers!!
