power amp help
« on: July 24, 2012, 07:06:39 pm »

Have four subs that I am looking to power.  Each loaded with 2 low rider 18's = 4 ohm load.  Program rating for each pair of drivers is 3200 watts.  The builder designed the cabs to output 136 db @ 3000 watts input and remain linear.  He ran 4 crown XS1200's bridged.  Looking to not break the bank all at once so I am thinking about running two amps (each stereo 4 ohms) to start and then get 2 more and run all of them bridged, 1 per cab . Any thoughts?

Your facts look believable, are you looking for an amp recommendation? If so, what is your price range, is used ok, and do you need onboard processing?

Yes a reccomendation, price low as possible so used is fine with me, processing not required but HPF around 37.5 hz would be nice.

If you like the XS1200... http://buffalo.craigslist.org/msg/3067957273.html. I'm not saying that's the amp you should get, but if you want a low price and have time to shop around, go used. Watch your local craigslist and check the marketplace here.

If you are going to go with crown check out some used ITech 4000's. You won't need to bridge these amps and they are easy on wall power. If you decide you need more power and bridge they have really good limiters. Good working amps can be had for around $1000.

I've been waiting that amp out in hopes of finding another one.  I was thinking it best to not wind up with a mixture of different models although it seems an xs1200 is an xti4000 without the processing.

I didn't think about looking at the Itech 4000.  I thought they would cost way more than that.  I will check it out. Thanks!

XTI or most of the budget amps available today, for high power subs is not ideal at best for many reasons, the XTI is a great amp but not for heavy sub duty. Keep looking on eBay and craigslist for itechs, I've been following eBay for a long time and to get that price ($1000 for IT4000) would take awhile, the 4000 usually goes for $1200-1300, the 6000 $1500-1600 and the itech 8000 goas for $1800-1900. If you find an amp that has particularly low hours or still has some warranty left on it then the price would go up. Average hours for the used amps is around 2000 hours. You can find great operational and cosmetic condition amps with more then 30,000 hours on them and there are those with low hours that have taken much more abuse then they should have so do your research thoroughly.

As a general practice when you buy a used itech you should ask for the amps serial number and give crown tech support a call to find out the specific amp service history.

I would use 1 PLX3102 bridged for each 3200w cab.
Or even a PLX3602 bridged per cab.
These amps also have a switchable 30hz LF filter as well and a
100hz crossover ability if needed.
