Get iPad, sell snake??
« on: June 21, 2012, 03:33:51 pm »

Ever since I began putting mixer near stage and mixing from iPad, I haven't needed my 200' snake.

That doesn't mean I'll never use it again though.

What have the rest of you done in this situation?

Kept one good snake for back-up and sold the others.

Still have and use 150' Medusa 24x8 and EWI 50' 16x4, but most stage-side hooks ups ( tablet)  use my regular gig band's splitter snake direct into the mixer. ( all amp racks have 30' drive cables )

So far I've kept my snake system in the truck. Just in case I get to that gig where the wireless does not work....

Has not happened yet.

I'm also inclined to have a backup IPad/Router/Laptop etc.

But then I also carry backup mixers/amps/speakers...

It's tough being anal. Or maybe just 40+ years of doing this have taught me a few lessons?

Most gigs are with the mixer sidestage so the big (24x8x150) snake doesn't come out much but until I can move to a digital stagebox with cat5, I am keeping the snakes. I also have a 16x4x100 and several smaller ones (used as stage sub-snakes mostly).
Even when sidestage, I often run a small (short) snake out on the stage to reduce the rats nest at the mixer.

StudioLive 24.4.2, 100' 24x8 snake. Some gigs some venues I use the snake. Others I don't. My usual gig, I do use it so I can have A mix position to adjust any gains while recording, or if it's a really tricky band, I can mix from the desk. 9 times out of 10 I mix remotely with the iPad.

Another venue I set up basically to mix from the side, almost dead in front of the main in fact. So I just remote mix and leave the snake in the trailer. I'll run a 30' 8 channel
Snake to the back to cover drums (usually a 5 piece kit) bass and the 2 guitars. Then just run the mic cables directly to the board.

In a third venue I use a StudioLive 16.0.2 and it's pretty much on the stage, and again I remote mix out front.

Handy as heck, but I'm definitely keeping my snake. I'm doing a 2 day Canada Day event, and I'll set up my FOH in my gear trailer, and then remote mix as well. I definitely need the snake for that.

Keep the snake... As good as the iPad sounds to mix; I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket.

I have a 32x8-150 snake with my LS9-32; I find myself mixing with the Laptop more often than the iPad.  Yamaha's doesn't offer all features that Studio Manager has; aka very very limited channel strip adjustability and you cannot adjust the dynamics.

In my world wireless networks are ALWAYS backed by fiber or copper. Now who would think that companies spending millions on networking infrastructure would still insist on a piece of wire or fiber being in place with all this good wireless networking going on.  ;)
