Multiple ipads with Yamaha CL? Will it happen?
« on: June 19, 2012, 04:11:47 pm »

Currently the Yamaha website confirms that you can only pair 1 ipad at a time with the new CL desks. Although you can pair a PC running studio manager AND an ipad running stagemix to the same desk concurrently, which is a good thing.

Does any body have the scoop on whether Yamaha will support multiple ipads on one desk in future updates? Or not at all?

When I was at NAB, they talked about that. They basically said that it won't happen. Has to do with the way the networking interface access the wireless router for the iPad. As far as I'm concerned, we're doing good to get the CL Editor (which is a stand alone software, and NOT part of the Studio Manager shell anymore) in addition to the Stage Mix app.

My real interest is when they are going to release Stage Mix for Android tablets, which I prefer over the iPad.

As the FOH/systems guy, I don't generally need remote control of consoles.  Remote operation of system controllers, amp and device networks (via System Architect) is useful to me, however.  Right now I use a Motion Labs tablet.  It's a Windows XP machine that runs all of what I need.  The bonus is that I *can* remote our TCP/IP based consoles and that I get the fullest implementation of the desk on the tablet - I usually need full access to the more arcane of functions.  Most "apps" access only limited feature sets.

I buy tools that help me do my job better and/or faster.  If I have to buy an ios device I will, but I'd rather have a choice of platforms.

Tim,

I'm basically in the same boat as you, except that I use a Lenovo X61 tablet (flip around scrreen type) instead of the motion labs.  The X61 is a dual core intel processor and I'm running win7 64 bit on it. It's been running this way for over a year and working great. I highly recommend it, because those Motion labs tablets are getting long in the tooth nowadays!

As for the original post, I am spec-ing a new console for a church and the ability to use ipads as personal monitor mixers (to replace a 16 ch aviom system) was brought up. I was hoping that Yamaha had built in the ability to network ipads, but it looks like Justice got the answer at NAB. Oh well.....

The new Microsoft Surface tablet looks great: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en/us/about.aspx
Finally a touch-tablet running a full version of Windows 8 Pro, and an attached tactile keyboard/softcover combo. USB and MicroSD slots.

airfader now has an android app, similar to the presonus tablet mix setup, for personal monitors

you get the added benefit that airfader is lightyears ahead of stagemix

...in the same way a plane is lightyears ahead of a car...
