Some were metal, other, after the Challager were fliment wound (carbon fiber). I don't know if they changed after the shuttle explosion but here's a good link.

It starts with the launch pad sound suppression water flooding the pad, then the exploding bolts go off, only gets better from there. The article gives props to the sound recording, nice.

I did read the DB level is 200 and on what scale who cares?  So keep in mind any condensor
is just not gonna work at 200db or more..........

I just watched this again, details.... sound barrier phenomenon clearly seen at 780mph.

I know that in the past they've used DPA/B&K 4006 to record shuttle launches.

194db actually, at that SPL the negative part of the pressure wave begins to approach vacuum.

   Yes,  but from a distance.   The recorded track is clearly not from a typical microphone.

In 78 I was in the infield watching Pink Floyds Animals tour (lots of great colors) and that
giant pig was right above our head and it exploded.  I swear it was the negative part of the pressure
wave as we felt a sucking force then the impact of the wave hit us when that giant thing blew up
All we said was...WOW dood did you feel that?  :D
