advice needed regarding purchase of microphones - comparison
« on: March 12, 2012, 12:36:26 AM »

We (small church -6 total singers) are looking at buying a few mics to replace some cheap samson mics.   I am looking at the shure sm48, audio technica M8000 or EV cobalt 7?
Any ideas on which would be best for female and male singers.  We cannot spend alot right now or I would be looking at buying Shure sm58. These mics will be hand held and not in booms, so handling noise will be an issue.
Or does anyone know of another mic that would be better in a low price range?

My go to budget mic is the Sennheiser e835. 3 packs are available for about $200. That buys you a better mic than an sm58 in terms of evenness of response as you back off. It also gets you a 10 year no questions warranty.  The other mic's you listed are all somewhat in the same range as the Samson's.  To be fair I classify the 58 and other similar $100 mic's as mid-grade and about the lowest quality I care to deal with in the long run. Everything below that is mostly low quality DJ grade stuff and the stuff above that is the stuff I typically care to own.  There are some exceptions but they're few and far between.

Also, change your forum name to your full name. Been a while since I registered but the registration process IMO is broken given how anal the moderators are about it round here.  Should require your real name and that should then be set as your display name, but cest la vie.

These are arguably the best inexpensive mic you can find.

+1 on the 835s in the 3 pack. I've never used the Audiopyle. 835 is very generically applicable, sounds a lot like their more expensive 935 for a great price and the 3 pack deal is a solid discount from the 1 mic list price. I would not by a 48 - if you are going Shure you might as well at least get the thing, the 58.

I really like the 835's too! Have 4 of them. One thing I really like about them is they do not have an on/off switch. This puts all the control on the soundman. There will be no question why the mike is not working without the ability of the vocalist to turn it off.

+1 on the e835. Our church has had 4 of them for about 8 years. They're very robust and sound good. The only time I worry about handling noise is if a singer starts clapping with it. (I will remind them not to and mute them if necessary.)

+1 more on the e835's. At least in that price point.

Our church has 4 e835s and  4 of the wireless equivalent. We love them. I understand the Blue 100 is very similar and have seen it beat the e835 and SM58 in a side by side, but I have no direct experience.

Has anyone tried the Carvin 68?  http://www.carvinguitars.com/products/M68

The reviews sound great, but I don't know anyone who has one personally.

My vote goes to the EV 767A.  This is the best upgrade our church has ever made.  The mic is crisp with good bass and no mud.  One of the cleanest sounding mics out there.  You can find them for about 80 bucks on ebay.  You want be sorry you purchased these.

I reluctantly selected the Audio Technica M8000. When they arrived I was surprised at how well they sound. I am completely sold on them and would put them up against any Shure SM58 or Beta 58.
I have a comparison video that I shot on my youtube channel if you care to view.

Part 2 shows the only issue I found with this mic but also shows a quick fix too...
Just my two cents... Thanks for all the cool posts, I enjoy learning for everyone

I'm glad they sound well.  That's better than sounding sick.  The word you're looking for is good

Never judge the sonic quality of any audio gear on the evidence of a YouTube video.......unless demonstrated by an acknowledged master like Dave Rat.

Glad you liked your M8000.  Good for you.
