SD 1 is the best value for the $$, period. It is very powerful and very useful IF you ignore the video for the most part and take a slightly different approach to operation. You will need to spend a fair amount of time  ...OK, a lot of time...building scenes for your gigs, but once you get up to speed it goes very quickly. Feel free to contact me directly if you need some help getting started if you choose this route.
SD 1 has 99 pages w/ 16 scenes per page; each scene can be ANY combination of stationary looks and/or chases, with speed/fade fully programmable for each chase on each scene. You won't run out of playback choices very quickly. SD 2 is more powerful and useful in that it has 2 DMX universes and 48 scenes per page, but you really don't need to spend the $$ for what you're describing. You can run more than 16 fixtures independently on the SD 1, just have to be creative with your fixture assignments/patches.
