I received mine as well.   I have the same general thoughts.   The mfg is working on a stand to hold the unit while the USB cable is attached to maintain vertical antenna polarisation.  They said it wasn't possible to move the USB connector on future models.

I asked the mfg if it is possible to show more spectrum on the computer screen that on the device display when connected via USB.   He said there is provision in the firmware for a future upgrade where the computer will show way more spectrum than the device.  Good to know. 

Also this case:  http://amzn.com/B000HDJT4S  fits the device with sacrificial SMA connectors and terminators connected.

For anyone interested in more versatility, capabilities and accuracy, take a look at the 'Signal Hound SA44B', which is a very capable SA under $1,000. It does require a Windows based PC or laptop for display and interface. The TTi unit mentioned as an alternative does use an obsolete Palm T|X engine may have been a cost effective and very usefull solution, but is twice as expensive (if it still can be found), and is limited to just two RBWs (280 or 15 kHz).
The apparent frequency error of some Sennheiser ew IEM systems mentioned in an earlier post ahs to be due to frequency (or display) tolerance of the RF-Explorer, as the frequency synthesizer of the Sennheiser transmitters is far more precise and accurate than the best case errors of the RF-Explorer.
