Just trying to help!
I believe you have - I'm not sure if somehow you interpreted my response as not being grateful - I was saying that I was glad it wasn't something to do with my user profile, and that I'm willing to help test with forum admins if they want to.

I can't tell from the discussion above what the problem is or might be. Perhaps, TJ, you could send me ([email protected]) the photo you tried to post so I can test the process with your original image.

OK, I don't know why the original photo generated the error msg, but that's also what I got when I attempted to post it. I then opened it in Photoshop (CS4, I'm skipping CS5 lol) and Saved for Web, which actually yielded a slightly larger filesize (93.8Kb rather than 86.8 ), but this file uploaded properly with no error msg. In Photoshop, the only difference that I see is that the original shows as ( RGB/8 )* while the resaved copy shows as ( RGB/8 )#. I know this has somewhat to do with color space, but beyond that I haven't a clue.

Download IrfanView (and the plug-ins).  You can resize pics, and decrease the resolution to get the file size down (which IME seldom makes a visible difference unless you have your browser blow it back up).

Tim - I assume you're replying to me, but I guess I'm confused, as the problem I am having is not related to image size or file size - I always resize my pictures to a web-appropriate size.  My gripe is that SMF pukes on whatever the default settings are from Photoshop CS4, something the other forums I'm on can handle without issue.  Ernie has suggested a workaround of "saving for web", which would be my first choice rather than additional software.

Also, I'm confused at your comment - you seem to be indicating a difference between image size and resolution.  Unless you're working in print where you have a target paper output size and stretch or compress an image to fit that, image size and resolution are one and the same.  Did you mean changing the compression settings?

Possibly.

One has the ability to change the picture size by specifying pixels wide x pixels high.

One also has the ability to adjust the "Save quality" - the file size in mb/kb is decreased as the quality is decreased.  Whether this is a form of compression I do not know.
