unknown microphone??????
« on: February 18, 2011, 12:33:18 AM »

A friend of mine called me asking how to wire the XLR connector for the mic in the photo. It uses a 5 pin XLR, I told him that could lend itself to many possibilities! He could not find any name or model number on the mic. It looks like one of many measurement mics I have seen with the exception of the chrome end and the side ports that make me think cardioid pattern. Sorry for the not so great picture that's what he sent me from the phone.

Let me know.

can't really tell from the pic, but sometimes 5 pin xlr's are used in stereo mics.

Just a guess, but I'm thinking that the extra 2 pins are for the "lunch pail" pre-amp / power supply thingy. that your friend may not have. Shocked

  Hello,

Like I said in the other.... if it doesn't have a serial number/model number....it's probably crap.

None of the quality measurement Mics I've ever seen....Larson/Davis, B&K, Rion, Sencore, Scantek, etc... have a closed opening (bezeled opening) and, they all have screw off capsules with no soldered wires.

 Good Luck,
 Hammer

 ps. it's probably chinese.

Compared to others,I don't think it's a stereo mic. I'm leaning towards no name import mic. Next week I'll get it in my hands and check it out.

Upside down?

Are there actually ports around the XLR on a VP88, like there are in the photo? Inquiring minds want to know.

Hi,
No ports, that is not a VP88. Er, you were asking seriously, yes?

No, I was not asking seriously. It is clearly not a VP88, from both the photo and the description.

Can a directional mic be used as a measurement mic?

Well I finally got my hands on the mic. It has no identification what so ever on it. The capsule is not removable, it's hard wired to the pre amp board. It's not a stereo mic of any sort. The five pin xlr is only wired to pins 1,2,3. As suspected it's certainly a knock off mic.
