The spiritual father of "The Wall of Sound" has died
« on: March 13, 2011, 07:32:20 PM »

Augustus Owsley-Stanley, aka "Bear" has died in a car crash in Australia.

The linked story doesn't mention anything of his audio guy period.

He was more famous as an "underground chemist" but I knew him better as someone who always wanted to try something new to make the band SOUND better.

He was also a world class curmudgeon  ;)

No denying he played an important role in my life. Professionally and recreationally.

The BBC Radio4 program, The Last Word, had a very amusing  article/obituary about him.
Here is the link - I don't know if there are any regional/national download restrictions:

Sad to say that this little radio obit is far superior to anything that I'm aware of that appeared in the media here in the USA, even in San Francisco. :(

They also said the wall of sound was a stereo system-which it was not

So at least one fact was incorrect

Indeed.

Bear thought "stereo" was grossly overrated.

He thought that every sound source should come from, as much as possible a single point.

Which strangely is the "theory" behind the much maligned Bose "stick" system.

But with the bluegrass band "Old And In The Way" Bear's plan was to have each instrument amplified by it's own small Meyer rig, a UPA or two each for the banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar and bass.   They just never figured out a way to successfully put the speakers BEHIND the musicians like he wanted.   The differential mic pairs that were used for the vocals in the Wall of Sound just weren't useable by bluegrass instruments where the "mixing" is done by moving in and out on the mic.

I long ago forgot that detail.

If I recall correctly, as a result of this recreational activity (ingestion) there were LOTS of colors. Although none were there the next day. Hmmm.
