DVD Players w/ front panel navigation keys...
« on: March 17, 2010, 04:53:20 PM »

Trying to find one (three actually).  My quick searching brought up the Pioneer DVD-V5000 and V8000, but not much else.  Anyone else know of anything they wouldn't be afraid to use in an install?

I can't believe there aren't more of these out there.  It just seems like it would make sense.

Thanks...

I have too...but they don't have the nav controls (up, down, left, right, enter) on the front panel.

I wasn't able to find any of that model available in the U.S. and for 120volts.

I've decided to go with the Pioneer DVD-V5000 after talking with a buddy that's used several with no issues.

Thanks.

Funny that, I've been looking myself.  I've just been looking at the Tascam CD200i (CD not DVD) for an install.  I got a bit scared when I saw a post somewhere, where the author called them "Trashcam" and wouldn't install them anywhere.

What has been the track record for the ones you've put in?

Cheers,

Chris

I've had absolutely no problems with anything I've ever used/installed from Tascam.  We used to use a lot of Denon/Marantz stuff, but got pretty tired of the service calls.  Since we switched to Tascam wherever possible, we haven't had a single problem.

the fewer the buttons the cheaper they can make them Smile

A good option for you could be a Oppo... it is a BluRay player as well but base model $289 retail there is no channel for buying them other than direct.  They are a great player... some of the highest rated in the consumer industry but are build much better than your typical consumer piece.

some players can navigate the menu through other buttons on the front panel...for instance i found a JVC deck the other day was able to navigate with the skip chapter buttons and then play is almost always a substitute for the OK/enter command.  I understand how that could be confusing for your customer.

Yeah...this is one of those jobs where it needs to be as simple and as self-explanitory as possible as different people with nearly no a/v skills will be using this system frequently.

Isn't that every job hahaha!  Totally understand.

Oppo is the only one I know of.  Another option could be adding a simple fixed inexpensive keypad nearby with only the commands you want touched... sometimes a even better option when these players decide to use a button for multiple actions...this lets you use a discrete command if avail. to control only what you want them too.  I also understand the "over kill" factor of doing this.
