Adapter Needed
« on: January 21, 2009, 07:24:15 AM »

Hi.  Does anyone know where I can find a manufactured adapter or patch cord for a Nema 5-15P to a Nema L6R?  (Trying to power a 230v international amp with US 220v.)  Thanks.

Brian:

The 5-15 is for 110V and the L6 is for 220V, they are not cross compatible.

If you are looking/trying to make a cheater cord that takes 2 110V outlets to make 220V, no one makes this as it is illegal.  If any code enforcement officer or fire department person were to see this, you will get shut down and fined.

Can the international amp run on 220V, or does it need 230V?
Can it run on 60Hz?

If you need 220V, you need to get a real 220V service where you are trying to hook up, and use a 220V connector.  If a 220V service is not available, you may be able to get a boost transformer that takes 110V and properly makes 220V.

Do you have more information on this amp? What voltages does it say it needs? How many Amps (watts) does it need to operate?

Thanks John.

The amp is a Crown MA3600.  It's an international unit for 230v and according to Crown (below ref.), can operate at 220-240v 50/60hz.

"AC Power Requirements: 100 VAC, 50/60 Hz; 120 VAC, 50/60 Hz; and 230 VAC, 50/60 Hz units are available. 230 VAC, 50/60 Hz units can be used with 220 and 240 VAC. All versions draw 90 watts or less at idle. 100 and 120 VAC units can draw up to 30 amps of current; 230 VAC units can draw up to 15 amps."

The amp comes with a standard 3 prong Nema 5-15 plug end.  Rather than cutting the plug and rewiring with a new one, I was hoping there was some adapter or patch cord out there.

The amp will be served by a dedicated 220v power source in accordance to code.

Thanks.

OK - I see what you are doing now (I think).

The amp currently has a 5-15 on it and you want to plug it into a L6.

This is a bit contradictory if this is a international unit and is set up for 220-240V, as the Nema 5-15 standard has a max rating for 125V.

If it is in fact a international unit wanting 220-240V, you need to get rid of the 5-15, so you may as well cut it off and put a proper L6 connector on it.

I would talk to Crown's Technical Support Group to verify what you actually have, if there is any question whatsoever as to this amp being set for 220-240V (or possibly reconfigured for 110V at some point in time).
