Suggestions for Mid/High cabs for jobbing band
« on: October 20, 2008, 05:33:07 PM »

Hello,
The jobbing band I am working with is looking into buying some new tops for the system. Right now we have one EV T series 12in box a side. Needless to say we are in major need of upgrade. What we need is

-Cover a dance floor (usually 20x20) for dancing music
-Cover around 100-200 people for speech (toast/podium stuff)
-Light weight (under 40lbs would be nice)
-Pole Mounted

Current subs are some 15in bag end subs. Not great, but they are not a low end heavy band so they do the job.

Budget is around $4k for both speakers. Let me know what speakers you guys are fond of in this range.

Thanks,
Daniel

I got a chance to use the QSC HPR152i.  I was sutibly impressed.
At 100 lbs it is heavier then you want, but will be well within your budget.

I like the Turbosound TQ-445 a lot.  It gets extremely loud for a very small box, so you'll have room to grow.  I assume you are looking for another passive cabinet?

Other stuff to check out:
EV QRX-112/75
EV Phoenix-1122m
EAW JFX 260 or 290
other Turbo Q-Light boxes

EV ZX5 would fit all your criteria, except it is 49.6 lbs.  I doubt if you will find a speaker meeting your requirements for "under 40 lbs.".  Even the powered version (ZXa5) would come in under your price range, and it is 50.5 lbs.

I'd look at JBL MRX515 if you want passive or PRX515 if you want powered.

I have used the PRX515 and they were really nice.

With a budget of 4 grand I would look at a pair of powered speakers like RCF Art 322a's,522a's or the new 722a's. You may be able to get into a set of TT22a's too at that price.
FBT Himaxx40's would be another speaker to check out. I have a set of Maxx4a's and I like them better than my old set of JF290's. Both the RCF's and FBT's all weigh right at 40lbs or less and will easily meet your requirements.

I spent 10 years running the biggest jobbing band in your market, and 2 pair of Nexo PS10s suited them fantastically for 5 of those years.  You get aimable coverage, smooth high end, consultant acceptibility due to their size, The only down side is that you probably need subs to go with them.  Cheaper than that, a zx5 or QSC HPR is a great jobbing speaker.

"In your market"-Dan, check around at various pro audio shops in the area, and see what they have for rent, you may want to base your decision on what you can rent to set up a larger FOH speaker configuration.  Having the same model in your own rig can make things easier.

Best regards,

I would also recommend either the ART522A or ART525A. Light weight, excellent sound & build quality, high output.
